Batteries

There are many types of batteries you can buy to power your RC models, so it can be a bit overwhelming for the beginner. This is a quick rundown to give you what you need to know.

The most common is the 6-Cell 7.2 volts(V) battery pack. They are made with either nickel metal hydride (NiMH) or nickel cadmium (NiCd) cells. You'll also see a milliampere hours (mAh) rating in each battery name.

Typically, the higher the voltage, the more power, and the better the potential speed and acceleration. The higher the mAh, the longer the battery will run before needing to be charged again. Of course, the higher both of these numbers are, the more the battery will cost.

We sell batteries from 3.6V to 9.6V, with mAh ratings from 200mAh to 5000mAh.

If you're into the hobby to just have a little fun, a regular 7.2V battery with a mAh rating of below 2000 should work fine. If you want a really impressive speed, however, or want to race, an investment in a few good batteries can make the difference between a win and a loss.

Lots of people like to keep several batteries on hand, so they can charge one while using the other. This allows for minimum downtime. Charging typically takes 20-30 minutes.

LiPo Batteries

Lithium Polymer (LiPo) are the best quality you can get in relation to RC. They provide the most power potential. LiPo batteries require special chargers and more care in handling, but are worth it for the performance. LiPo batteries give much more power per pound (have a better power to weight ratio) than NiMH battery packs. LiPo performance can be more consistent over a charge if treated correctly, instead of steadily dropping off as is common with other types.

One caveat: you can't run a LiPo battery all the way down. If you do, you risk losing you're investment. So beginners are advised to stick with NiMH or NiCd packs.

And as mentioned, more caution must be used with LiPo batteries when charging and discharging them.

Connectors

There are a couple connector types you should be familiar with in regard to what we sell at RC Model Pro. What we call the standard connector, and what most RC models come with, is the tamiya connector. These are good for beginners, but they can't stand up to higher voltages.

This is why we also sell batteries with the Traxxas connector. Most newer Traxxas models come with these equipped, so they can handle higher-voltage situations.

But the great things about RC is that you aren't stuck with a certain plug/connector. They are easy to switch out on both the battery and the model itself.
